HOUSTON, Texas -- A man has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself in southeast Houston early Saturday morning, according to the Houston Police Department.

At 3 a.m., Houston Fire received a call about a person in crisis in the 7100 block of Ilex Street near Garland Drive.

When officials arrived, they found a man in the street with a gun pointed at his head, Assitant Chief Yasar Bashir of HPD said.

HPD and SWAT were called to negotiate with the man, which took about an hour, police said. Preliminary information stated that the location is where his common-law wife and children lived.

The man then proceeds to jump a fence into the home onto the lawn of his wife and children's home.

There was a point when officials could not see the man because a perimeter was set up, and it was dark with heavy fog.

According to police, there were about 10 gunshots fired, but it was unclear if the man was shooting toward law enforcement or in the air.

Unaware of the man's status, the negotiation continued, and a robot equipped with a camera was deployed.

As it got to the side of the house, they saw the man lying on the ground with a gunshot wound that appeared to be self-inflicted, officials said.

Medical assistance was applied, but the man was pronounced dead, police said.

No one inside the home was injured, according to police.
