HOUSTON It happened at Klein ISD's Epps Island Elementary School on Smiling Wood Lane. Syrina Salazar, 11, a fifth grader, collapsed while she was engaged in physical activity in PE class. Immediately EMS and a school nurse were called. CPR was performed and a defibrillator was used.
She was taken to Methodist Willowbrook Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
According to school officials, the Salazar had been absent from school for a couple of days prior to this. A letter was sent home to make parents aware of the situation.
The school is in spring break now, but crisis counselors will be available on campus when classes resume.
