Neighbors in Canterra Creek, a community in Iowa Colony, told ABC13 they felt like their backyard had turned into a shooting range.
"(We) could have died," Duke Amos said after he and his wife were awakened by the sound of a bullet flying into their home in the middle of the night on Sunday.
According to witness statements to police, two trucks pulled into a parking lot and exchanged gunfire. One bystander was hit in the leg and another was hit in the torso.
Damon Spiller's son said the 56-year-old was rebuilding his life and relationships before he was discovered shot to death in his bed at Harmony House.
Police told ABC13 that they had received 60 reports regarding the Shadowdale Oaks Apartments since February, but that only two of those calls had involved gunshots.
"We'd say he really dodged a bullet," police said, "but in reality, he LODGED a bullet."
