Free back-to-school health care in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- It's one of the best kept secrets: free healthcare for students in dozens of schools in and around the Houston area.

The medical services are provided by Memorial Hermann Health Centers for Schools program. The program serves about 65,000 uninsured or underinsured students in 70 schools across five districts.

"We can do a lot of screenings before school starts to just make sure that your kid is healthy and ready to be in school," said Teresa Harris, PA, who runs a Memorial Hermann clinic at Sharpstown High School.

The program also offers dental services which are performed in three mobile vans. Dentists in those vans perform fillings, extractions and crowns for free.

"I really appreciate the program," said parent Babatunde Adefule. They've been so good. They don't discriminate. You know, sometimes the language barrier is an issue. When we come here the hospitality is very fine."
