Galveston came in second in USA Today's 10 Best Readers' Choice Travel Awards for Best Spring Break Destination. The island came in second behind Cancun but beat out other popular cities like Panama City Beach and Destin, Florida.
People from all over the country voted in the online poll. They chose 10 of 20 cities selected by a panel of USA TODAY and 10best.com editors.
"Galveston's spring break scene offers the perfect mix of debauchery and wholesome family friendly fun," the contest website reads. "Schlitterbahn water park provides an alternative to the beach for cooling off, while the Seawall is always bustling with activity: spring breakers riding tandem bikes, dining at oceanfront seafood restaurants and enjoying the rides and midway games of Pleasure Pier."
In December, Galveston was also named one of TripAdvisor's Top 10 Destinations on the Rise in the US.
"Things keep moving in a bright direction for Galveston, and we are so proud the wider public and savvy travelers are starting to take notice of all the great, diverse offerings we have on the island," said Kelly de Schaun, executive director of the Galveston Island Convention & Visitors Bureau and Park Board of Trustees.
