Libyan officials: Texas teacher shot, killed in Benghazi

TRIPOLI, Libya

The Austin Stone Community Church said in a statement Thursday that Ronnie Smith was a chemistry teacher at Benghazi's International School for the past year and a half.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that Smith was killed while jogging. Dave Barrett, an executive pastor at the Austin church, says Smith's wife and son were in Texas with family at the time of his death.

A Libyan security official says Smith was shot near the compound where a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed by Islamic militants last year.

The University of Texas says Smith graduated from the school in 2006 with a master's in chemistry.
