HISD school principal accused of shoplifting

HOUSTON

Tammie Daily is expected to appear in court this Friday on a charge of misdemeanor theft.

Daily was allegedly caught shoplifting over the Thanksgiving weekend. According to court documents, on Sunday, Daily stole two boxes of ornaments from a Macy's store.

An attorney for Daily says the 52-year-old woman put the ornaments in a shopping bag to protect the items and then forgot to pay.

Daily, who makes nearly $112,000 annually, also allegedly did not pay for some cologne, a man's shirt and two ties -- items totalling several hundred dollars. She paid for the items after being stopped by store personnel, but was then arrested, charged and later released.

HISD officials said in a statement that Daily immediately reported the incident to her direct supervisor. Since then, she has been temporarily reassigned pending the outcome of the investigation into her shoplifting.

Daily's attorney adds that she has never had any run-ins with the law before, and he hopes prosecutors will see this incident as a misunderstanding and drop the charges.
