Free meals for needy families this Thanksgiving

HOUSTON

Here's a list of places offering free Thanksgiving meals across the Bayou City.

The 35th Annual Thanksgiving Big Super Feast at the George R. Brown Convention Center begins at 10am, and free meels will are expected to be served to over 25,000 men, women and children. The meal will include turkey and dressing, yams, green beans, corn sweet peas, cranberry sauce and delicious desserts.

Volunteers at the event also will distribute over 500,000 pieces of clothing, blankets, jackets, coats and household items; offer free medical screenings, flu shots, hair cuts, long distance calls and tips about finding a job.

We are still accepting donations of turkeys, canned goods, clothing, household items and cash donations to help meet our goal. Donations can be mailed to City Wide Club, P. O. Box 8446, Houston, Texas 77288 or donations can be received online at www.citywideclub.com.

Donations can be brought to Koinonia Community Center, 3229 Hadley, Houston, Texas 77004 as well as other local drop off sites.

The Wade Smith Foundation is hosting its 2nd Annual Gobble Game Dinner and Football Watch Event on Thanksgiving Day. This year, Houston Texans offensive lineman Wade Smith has teamed up with Houston's own rap legend Bun B to feed less fortunate families and give them a wonderful Thanksgiving experience.

Gobble Game was established to continue building the Houston community up during harsh economic and, often sad, times. The event will be held at Bethel's Place Empowerment Center, located at 12660 Sandpiper in southwest Houston, from 10am to 2pm.

On Thanksgiving Day, Houston's Hard Rock Café, located at 502 Texas, will be closed to the public to cook and serve turkey and all the fixings to homeless Houstonians from 11am to 12:30pm.

About 250 residents of Star of Hope's Transitional Living Center and the downtown Women and Family Emergency Shelter will be treated to the meal along with a visit from Santa – complete with gifts. Around half of the 250 attending will be children.

Houston dentist Dr. Phyllis Morgan has donated the turkeys and will join her staff in serving the luncheon.

Thousands of The Cheesecake Factory Staff Members Volunteer to Serve Thanksgiving Meals at Salvation Army Shelters in Pasadena from 11am to 11:45am.

The Pasadena event is part of The Cheesecake Factory's annual, nationwide Thanksgiving Day Feast, involving more than 3,000 staff volunteers serving holiday meals for more than 6,000 low-income individuals and families from around the country. The Salvation Army Pasadena Center for Worship & Service is located at 2732 Cherry Brook Lane.

Three area ministries are banding together to serve over 500 people a Thanksgiving meal at Long Point Baptist Church, located at 8009 Long Point in Spring Branch. Food will be served from 11.30 am to 1 pm.

Pink's Pizza in conjunction with The 429 Church is hosting a Thanksgiving meal for homeless and low-income families from10am-1pm at Pinks Pizza, 3404 N. Shepherd.


----------------- Murphy O'Brien is also hosting a Thanksgiving feast from 11am to 2pm at the Humble Civic Center. It's located at 8233 Will Clayton Parkway.
