"When somebody drives to the goal, they think twice because Dwight Howard's there," said fan Ahmad Howse. "He's also my favorite player since Orlando."
People playing basketball in the shadow of the Toyota Center Friday could not be more excited. They see Howard as the missing piece to the Rockets' puzzle.
"I think it's time for a championship," said fan Joshua Garcia. "Dwight Howard coming to Houston, that's our big three now - James Harden, Chandler Parsons, Dwight Howard."
"I think it's gonna be an amazing season for the Houston Rockets," added fan Derek Wiley. "I think he's an amazing player."
At sports bars, fans talked about Howard's three NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards. Houstonians say they are ready to see Howard put a disappointing year in LA behind him and restore the Rockets to their former glory.
"You know the Rockets really need a lot more talent on defense," said fan Ben Allen. "Offensive-wise, they're one of the best in the nation."
"I think it's gonna give the Rockets a chance to be a real championship team," added fan Denis Fletcher.
Of course, there were some skeptical fans who said a deal isn't a deal until it is signed. They are still wondering if all of the celebration is premature.
