With the help of volunteers, the Catholic nuns with the Dominican Sisters of Houston went down a list, calling Houstonians to ask if they support immigration reform and if not, trying to persuade them to do so.
It all comes after a group of nuns boarded a bus, taking their message to cities and towns around the country in an effort to generate support for reform they hope Congress will pass.
It is reform, they say, that will protect immigrant families and workers and also lead to a road map to citizenship for those who want to become American citizens.
"Based on basic Catholic social teaching, which tells us that the rights and dignity of all people should be respected," said Sister Ceil Roeger with the Dominica Sisters of Houston. "That everybody is made in the image and likeness of God; that there are many reasons for people to migrate and move around and some are forced to do so and cross our borders without the proper documentation. But that doesn't mean that they should not be here trying to support themselves."
Locally, the nuns and volunteers are targeting senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn. They are also getting on the phone asking Houstonians to call Representative Ted Poe.
The nuns' bus tour wrapped up last weekend but those nuns plan to work this week, making phone calls to Houstonians as they ask for their help to help pass immigration reform.
