Man accused of making bomb threats against synagogues

HOUSTON

The threat was made on April 30 against Congregation Beth Israel on North Braeswood near Mullins in southwest Houston and Congregation Or Ami in west Houston.

The Harris County District Attorney's Office has charged 32-year-old Dante Phearse with three counts of terroristic threat.

Police say Phearse made threats to bomb both places of worship. He was arrested Wednesday.

Court records show Phearse was convicted of robbery back in 2009.

Rabbi David A. Lyon of Congregation Beth Israel released a statement which read in part, "Many thanks to HPD for its follow-through and quick resolution to this unfortunate event. Though we have built institutions to transform hate into lessons for good, we can't eradicate the roots of anti-Semitism that are inherent in the arc of history."
