45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination

Today marks 45 years since the assassination of Martin Luther King, Junior.

Today marks a somber anniversary in our nation's history. It was 45 years ago today that civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed.

On April 4, 1968, Dr. King was gunned down in Memphis by James Earl Ray. Four years earlier, King was the youngest person to date to win the Nobel peace prize.

His legacy includes a posthumous presidential medal of freedom; a monument in Washington; and a national holiday in his name, observed every January .
