It's a fear his family say they didn't know until he tried to take his life.
Maria Dolores Deleg says it breaks her heart to watch this video of her 13-year-old trying to defend himself against a pack of bullies on his way home from school.
One teen fist fights him on the street while another records the assault in front of a group of classmates.
Deleg says they even posted the video online.
Deleg tells WABC-TV, our sister station in New York, that she feels an overwhelming grief and regrets bringing her son to Newark from Ecuador in August.
Esteban now admits the bullying started just two weeks after he started at Lafayette Street School.
The fight in the video happened in mid December, but It wasn't until mid January that she learned what was going on.
That's when the eighth grader tried to commit suicide by taking a load of pills, putting him in the hospital for nearly a month.
Mrs. Deleg wants the student to come forward.
The Newark School District is looking for all the students responsible and will discipline each for their involvement.
But Esteban says regardless of the outcome he won't go back to the same school.
