HPD: 3-hour Sunday crime spree ends with arrest

HOUSTON

The suspect, who police have not yet identified, allegedly robbed two stores and then led police on a high-speed chase. Officers finally caught him after searching for an hour in a wooded area near Clear Lake Boulevard and the Gulf Freeway.

"We found out later that he was a felony robbery suspect from the city of Pearland," G. Llanez with the Houston Police Department's Clear Lake Patrol Division said.

Police say the man robbed a CVS Pharmacy in Pearland and then hit a nearby Walgreens.

"He just didn't seem like he was in his right state of mind," Walgreens cashier Chelcie Cloud told us.

Cloud was working when she says the man reached across the counter into her register and took some money.

"Probably, at the most, $50. As soon as he was leaving out the door he snatched one of our customer's purses," Cloud said.

She watched as the man then got into his car and raced down Interstate 45. An officer tried to pull him over for speeding, but police say he refused to stop.

The suspect ditched his car here along the Gulf Freeway and went into the woods.

After an exhaustive one-hour search, officials say a K-9 unit caught up to him.

"The K-9 HPD officer did encounter and engage the suspect in the woods," Llanez said. "We anticipate getting felony charges for aggravated assault on a police officer for him assaulting a police officer as well."
