Police: Clerk pays gambling winnings in front of officers

GALVESTON

Police say two undercover officers and an 18-year-old assisting in the investigation entered a convenience store on Stewart Road around 3pm Friday.

The teen was able to purchase alcohol at the counter, police said. Officers observed the transaction, identified themselves as police officers to the clerk and then began gathering information for the prosecution of the clerk for the sale of alcohol to a minor.

As the officers were questioning the clerk, a customer came to the counter with a slip saying he'd won $165 in a gaming machine. The clerk paid the customer $165 cash in front of the officers, investigators said.

Police say that machine was illegal. Investigators collected gambling paraphernalia and more than $10,000 in cash.

Charges are expected pending further investigation.
