Stanford was convicted on 13 of 14 fraud counts earlier this month. Prosecutors say he ran a $7 billion ponzi scheme. The courts froze his assets and the state paid for his defense.
After several changes of counsel, the lawyers who defended him at trial received the case in 2010.
