Silsbee police Chief Mark Davis said Tuesday that five suspects who remain in custody are from Honduras and are believed to be in the U.S. illegally. He says a suspect from Houston has posted bond. All have been charged with forgery.
Davis told The Associated Press that Friday was payday for a manufacturing firm in Silsbee. He says the fake checks were similar to those from a legitimate company that supplies temporary workers.
The suspects were captured late Saturday after allegedly returning, for a second day, to try to cash more fake checks at some of the same businesses.
Police in Port Arthur and immigration authorities are assisting with the investigation.
