Serafino Alfe was cooking turkeys on Saturday for a fundraiser. He tripped and knocked a fryer over. The oil poured onto his leg causing third degree burns.
Alfe will undergo surgery this week at Loyola University Hospital.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says more than 141 serious fires and burns over the last decade have been linked to turkey fryers.
"Tell everyone to cook their turkeys in the oven. That's what my wife says. And she knows," Alfe told ABC7.
"He's unfortunately not the only one here with that problem. We have several other patients that either got injured in the same way or have actually gotten injured cooking," said Dr. Richard Gamelli, Loyola University Hospital.
Doctors urge anyone using a turkey fryer this Thanksgiving to use caution.
