Texas A&M University System Chancellor Mike McKinney is resigning after nearly five years of overseeing the 11-university system. McKinney made the announcement Tuesday. The one-time chief of staff to Gov. Rick Perry said he will step down July 1.

McKinney said in a statement posted on the TAMU website that "the time has come for me to step aside." His resignation comes while lawmakers and university system officials statewide grapple with the future of higher education in Texas.
