Two apartment residents in northwest Houston had to be rescued from their homes after a man drove his car into their stairway, trapping them inside. It happened around 10pm on Long Point near Campbell.

Police say the man was driving too fast and trying to make a turn on Long Point when he side swiped a sports utility vehicle, officials said.

His car bounced off the SUV and went into an apartment complex parking lot, slamming into several pillars and knocking down a metal staircase.

According to authorities, he may have been driving while intoxicated.

Officials said the woman driving the SUV was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The man wasn't hurt and was taken into custody, police said.

The car hit the posts and stairway so hard, it knocked the staircase down that was the access to the second floor.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the two apartment occupants who were trapped upstairs.
