El Paso could consider fee for plastic bags

EL PASO, TX The El Paso Times reported Monday that the fee likely to be proposed by Marty Howell, who is the city's sustainability manager, will be 10 cents a bag.

Howell says you're "using a lot of energy and oil to make something that's just going to get thrown away."

The council has told City Manager Joyce Wilson to propose a way to reduce the number of bags on streets.

Brownsville this month became the first city in Texas to ban single-use plastic bags commonly offered by grocery and retail stores. Brownsville shoppers must pay a $1 surcharge if they want a store's single-use plastic bag.
