Teen arrested in grandmother's murder

Cheretta Smith, 19, was taken into custody early Friday morning. She's charged with murdering her grandmother in Texas City.

A disabled woman who was legally blind was found beaten and stabbed in her apartment in an adult-living complex in Texas City over the weekend. Now her granddaughter has been arrested in the murder. Investigators say the body of Theretta Gayden Miller, 57, was found late Friday night by her granddaughter. Granddaughter Cheretta Smith, 19, has been charged with Miller's murder.

Texas City Police say their investigation led them to Smith and warrant was issued for her arrest. Smith was taken into custody at 12:15am today at her home in Galveston.

As of 10am, Smith was in the custody of the Texas City Jail. She will be transported to the Galveston County Jail at a later date. Her bond has been set at $250,000.

The apartment complex where Miller lived is for people 55 years of age and older.
