In an effort to clear up some confusion, the University of Texas medical branch will close its emergency room, ending a 'treat and transfer' program. [SIGN UP: Get headlines and breaking news sent to you]

That's according to the Galveston County Daily News, which is reporting that the facility will instead today start operating a 24-hour, walk-in urgent care center in the same building as its emergency room.

The 'treat and transfer' program had been in place since Hurricane Ike damaged the hospital's trauma center. The situation led to rumors of patient dumping and cherry-picking patients.
