Officials say two separate bombings have killed 11 people in eastern Afghanistan near the country's volatile border with Pakistan. A suicide bomber in a car blew himself up at a police checkpoint, killing six people, five of them civilians.

In Khost province, a bombing killed five people near a shrine as they celebrated the Persian new year, according to a police spokesman.

Elsewhere, NATO says one of its soldiers was killed Friday in a "hostile incident" in the country's south.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency. Thousands of new U.S. troops soon will be joining British, Canadian and Dutch forces trying to reverse gains by the Taliban.
