Keep food fresher and longer

Tips for storing foods:

  • Bread: If you're not going to eat it fast, you can keep it in the freezer for 3months.

  • Brown Sugar: It can get as hards as a rock. Store it in an airtight container to keep moisture in.

  • Butter: It can go rancid. Wrap and freeze what you don't use.

  • Fancy Cheeses: Wrap in wax paper and place in an airtight plastic bag to keep fresh.

  • Cooking Oil: Keep in opaque or dark containers and keep in a cool dark place.

  • Crackers: Crackers and chips can get soggy if not sufficiently protected from humidity. Use a chip clip or airtight container to keep them fresh.

  • Whole Wheat Flour: Unlike white flour, wheat flour contains higher levels of fat that gives it a brief shelf life. It will last 6 months in the fridge.

  • Ground Meat: Will keep for 1 or 2 days in the fridge. 3 months in the freezer.

  • Ice Cream: To stop freezer burn, place a piece of plastic wrap over the ice cream--then put the top back on.

  • Nuts and seeds: They can go rancid. In the fridge, they will last up to a year. Keep them in airtight portions if you choose to freeze them.

  • Powdered Sugar: Can absorb odors from spices. Keep it in an airtight container.

  • Spices: Ground spices typically have a 2-3 year shelf life, but heat and moisture can cause them to lose their OOMPH. Keep them in a dark place away from moisture.

  • Tea: If stored next to spices, tea can absorb these flavors, Keep in airtight container.
