Pesticides, fertilizers trigger alarm at university

WASHINGTON District of Columbia fire department spokesman Alan Etter says a maintenance worker found six containers of the materials Wednesday in an air duct of an unoccupied dormitory room in Ballard North Hall.

Ballard North and two other nearby residence halls were evacuated after the find at the northeast Washington campus.

Etter says the pesticides and fertilizers that were found are available commercially.

University officials say they plan to remove the containers and investigate why they were placed there.

Gallaudet is the nation's only liberal arts college for the deaf.
