We showed you the chase live as it happened here on abc13.com. It started along the Gulf Freeway near Telephone Road and ended nearly a half hour later in the front lawn of a home on Cavalcade and Majestic in northeast Houston.
The driver of the dark blue Nissan Altima didn't want to be pulled over by police officers. He instead weaved in and out of neighborhoods, beginning in southeast Houston and ending up half an hour later in a violent rollover crash near L.B. Euell, who was on his lawn mower.
" I had to jump off," he said. "I didn't know what was going on."
The crash that ended next to a house also ruptured a small gas line and for several minutes, neighbors didn't know what posed a greater hazard -- the driver or the gas leak.
Investigators say the suspect, who suffered a head injury, had an outstanding felony warrant and they're glad to have him in custody.
" We recovered some narcotics and a pistol in the vehicle with him. He's a documented prison gang member," said Sgt. Sean Rios with the Houston Police Department. "He's a bad guy and he's off the streets as the result of the officers today. They did a heck of a job."
The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
For neighbors like Euell, he's just glad nobody else got hurt.
"I thought I was going to be dead," he said. "That car just went airborne. If I hadn't have run, I might have gotten hit."
The car the suspect was driving was a rental.
