Traffic in the area was backed up to Fry Road as crews worked to clear the 18-wheeler crash that happened just after 5 a.m Wednesday, HPD said.
It's unclear what led to the crash, but authorities said the deputy was hospitalized due to his injuries, which are not life-threatening.
Authorities said the train contained 137 rail cars, including the 23 that derailed. Of those cars, three were leaking: one was leaking corn syrup, and the other two were leaking ethanol, but authorities said there were no threats.
According to reports, the incident happened at about 11 p.m. on Wednesday and was cleared up by 9 a.m. Thursday.

SkyEye video showed what appears to be a large piece of concrete on the main lanes of the highway at Beltway 8. Meanwhile, SLPD said work to cover a large pothole on the freeway at Williams Trace Blvd. is leading to some closures.
