Lanes reopened after deadly 18-wheeler crash on I-10 near Eldridge, Transtar shows
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The wreckage has cleared following a deadly crash involving an 18-wheeler and a diesel spill on Wednesday morning, according to TranStar cameras.
The crash was first reported on I-10 inbound near Eldridge at about 5 a.m.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of the Harris County Sheriff's Office said that police had shut down all the inbound lanes near Dairy Ashford as the investigation continued. Traffic in this area was seen backed up for miles near Kingsland Boulevard.
According to investigators, two people were confirmed dead at the scene after the crash also spurred a car fire.
In a release, the Houston Police Department said the 18-wheeler was traveling eastbound and struck the driver in the gold Mitsubishi Galant, causing it to roll over and slide down the freeway.
The 18-wheeler then struck a barrier and tipped over.
Both drivers were killed, HCSO says.
SkyEye13 images from over the scene showed the large truck flipped on its side, and hazmat crews worked to clean up the diesel spill, presumably from the truck. The passenger vehicle involved was also observed farther from the scene, with severe damage to it.
Back over the scene nearly six hours later, Skyeye13 observed the truck was moved upright and towed from the area. Officials then cleared the impacted lanes, restoring traffic flow just after lunchtime.
Eyewitness New was able to tie the truck to a small trucking company out of Richmond called Texas Five Star Logistics LLC. National safety records show this is a smaller fleet with only 10 trucks.
Those online records show in the last 24 months a company vehicle was involved in one other crash though it does not say if the driver was at fault or how severe it was.
ABC13 called a number associated with the company and is waiting on a call back.
