HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Police Department has said crews are working to clear a traffic nightmare on the Katy Freeway following a deadly accident on Wednesday morning.
The crash happened on I-10 inbound near Eldridge at about 5 a.m.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of the Harris County Sheriff's Office said that police had shut down all the inbound lanes near Dairy Ashford as the investigation continued. Traffic in this area was seen backed up for miles, up to Kingsland Boulevard.
According to investigators, two people were confirmed dead at the scene after the crash involving an 18-wheeler and another vehicle, leading to a fire.
SkyEye13 flew over the scene where the large truck was seen flipped on its side. Officials said hazmat crews are also on the scene dealing with a diesel spill. It is unclear what the truck was hauling.
The passenger vehicle involved was observed farther from the scene.
Officials did not elaborate on what led to the crash, but have said the clean-up will last through the morning.
All drivers are urged to find an alternate route.
