Deputy injured in Baton Rouge shooting recovers in Houston

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Nick Tullier was the most seriously injured of the surviving deputies during the July ambush in Baton Rouge. Over the past several months months, he has come a long way from the brink of death.

After the ambush, Tullier was in critical condition. In November, he was transferred to TIRR Memorial Hermann, where he has been working hard to recover from bullet wounds to his head and stomach.

"Nick can see. Nick can hear. Nick is aware of different aspects of his environment. Nick understands language. Nick knows who he is. Nick knows where he is," clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Katherine O'Brien said Thursday in a press conference.

Tullier knows he is in Houston in a hospital. He recognizes family members and can read words. He can also follow commands, but is limited physically and mentally. He becomes tired quickly.

While he has a long way to go and his future is uncertain, his father already considers him a miracle.

"It's incredible to see what they've accomplished with him and it's amazing to see what Nick wants to accomplish and is," James Tullier said.
