'We're prepared' Houston mayor says of weather plans ahead of Wednesday's World Cup game

Houston has faced heavy downpours over the last few days, with some street flooding across the city, sparking concerns ahead of Wednesday's FIFA World Cup game.

On Tuesday afternoon, city Mayor John Whitmire held a press conference to share details of how they're preparing for possible tropical downpours.

Some of the preparations included lowering Lake Houston, pre-staging some barricades at flood-prone locations, and law enforcement, as well as public works, were staged across the area.

"We're in touch with NRG officials, certainly the FIFA people. Fan fest. Fan fest has been so responsible, you know, any lighting within eight miles, people are avoiding the outdoors," Whitmire said.

The mayor added that city officials are also in touch with FIFA leaders.

"Certainly, we're in constant touch with first responders in terms of safety and all possibilities. But FIFA controls their games, we know they control the price, admittance, but we run the city," Whitmire said.

Friends make most of Houston floodwaters by riding out on 4-wheelers

ABC13 covered various parts across the Houston area on Monday that saw some heavy flooding due to storms. From stalled cars to people helping others get their vehicles out of the high waters.

But one group turned it into a core memory as they rode around their four-wheelers in the floodwaters at North Freeway and W. Mount Houston.

Beware of high water. These friends took out their 4-wheelers ."I made I call. He made a call. He made a call, bring the toys out." With more storms on the way, be careful. You may discover much worse than a snapping turtle.

ABC13 reporter Tony Atkins spoke to one of the men, who said the rain was an "inconvenience, but we're having fun now," he said.

The group also mentioned catching a snapping turtle.

"We were supposed to work today," Quan Irvin said. "I saw the water. I made a call. He made a call. He made a call. Bring the toys out."
