Cigarette thieves nabbed after police chase in north Harris County

HOUSTON

Authorities say the suspect stole from the Kroger's at Treaschwig Road near Cypresswood Drive around 2:30am, getting away with a large quantity of cigarettes.

Deputy constables responded moments after the suspects fled the store. They did get a good description of the suspects' vehicle. Another deputy constable on patrol spotted the vehicle and gave chase.

A neighbor described some of the commotion he heard outside of his home.

"I heard someone jump over the fence and then I heard like a grunt when they hit the rod. They must have had a pretty good sprint going because the fence isn't easy to jump," said resident Kevin Stanfield.

Deputy constables used K-9s to search the area and located two of three suspects at a home nearby. It's unclear if that was the home of one of the suspects or of someone they didn't know. A third man was also tracked down near the scene.

Police are also looking into a smash-and-grab at a Fiesta in north Harris County. Police say the suspects may have used sledgehammers to break into jewelry and cell phone cases at the store. It's not clear if the thieves got away with anything, but we do know the store was closed at the time.

It's not clear if the incidents are related.
