Antibiotics could be cause of children's deadly diarrhea

HOUSTON

A new study by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention finds most cases of a severe and potentially fatal diarrhea illness in children occur among kids who have recently taken antibiotics.

C. Difficile is one of the biggest causes of infectious diarrhea.

When kids and adults take antibiotics, they kill off the beneficial bacteria that protects against infection, and it can take weeks for that bacteria to come back.

The CDC urges doctors to pay attention and not over-prescribe antibiotics.
