ABC13, Univision joined forces to answer questions on Affordable Care Act deadline

HOUSTON

It's a historic event for an equally historic initiative, the Affordable Healthcare Act was enacted to ensure all Americans have access to affordable healthcare.

"Having access to healthcare is really important is a human right," said volunteer Ileana Salinas.

Salinas helped man the phones and says most folks just want to know if they're eligible.

"They want to know where they can find help because some people don't have a computer with Internet or they just want somebody to walk them through the process," Salinas said.

By law, most everyone needs to have health insurance by March 31 or pay a penalty tax. That tax is $95 per adult, $47.50 per child or 1 percent of the household income, whichever is greater.

Back at our studios, volunteers were also hard at work, answering your questions via a live web chat.

"And we are telling them and encouraging them to sign up as soon as possible," said Salinas.

Volunteers say they took more than 1,100 calls from people asking for assistance.
