Looking to land a new job? Head to social media

Nearly 94 percent of recruiters polled by Jobvite used social media to find their candidates in 2013. That number is up from 78 percent in 2008 and 89 percent in 2011. Recruiters say they made 78 percent of their hires through social media last year.

Linkedin and Facebook are the top networks for recruiting, but a Twitter account is the most public social media site with the most information available to recruiters through a quick search.

Twitter can improve a job candidate's visibility and virtually connect them with hiring managers.

Experts say those looking to land a job with their Twitter accounts should upload a professional looking headshot. Recruiters are also looking at Twitter handles, so make sure it includes your real name or something like it.

Career experts also say it is important to tweet three to five times each day about relevant information in your career field. Retweeting influential people in the field is also a good idea.
