Handcuffed man escapes from custody after being detained during traffic stop

HOUSTON

This happened along the Katy Freeway near Gessner near Memorial City Mall late Wednesday night.

A DPS trooper pulled the driver over on suspicion of DWI. The suspect was placed into handcuffs and put into the front seat of the trooper's patrol unit. A spokesperson for the agency says it is common practice for troopers to place suspects in the front seat, as their vehicles are not set up the same way as police cruisers.

When the trooper went to inventory the suspect's vehicle, the man somehow escaped the patrol car and ran across the westbound lanes of the freeway, jumping over a three-foot retaining wall -- all while in handcuffs.

A helicopter and K-9s were called out to search for the man for hours, but called off the search around 2am. The suspect remains on the loose.
