How Texas schools fared on National Signing Day

HOUSTON

Texas A&M University

Texas A&M has signed a player who could replace Johnny Football and another who should boost its struggling defense.

The Aggies signed Kyle Allen, who is rated the top quarterback prospect in the nation, to compete for the job left open when 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel declared for the NFL draft last month. Allen threw for more than 8,000 yards and 86 touchdowns in his career at Desert Mountain high school in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"This is a class that I think addresses our needs across the board," coach Kevin Sumlin said Wednesday as the Aggies unveiled their national signing class. "We have a plan of how we want to do things. We lost some very, very talented players offensively this year and we've kind of replaced those and we had a depth issue last year on defense."

They also inked the No. 1 rated defensive end in Arlington Martin's Myles Garrett. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Garrett had 81 tackles and 19 ½ sacks last season. Sumlin joked about his shock when he saw Garrett shirtless after going to watch him play basketball recently.

"He looked like he had on a Batman costume," Sumlin said shaking his head. "He's put together like crazy. He's got a tremendous upside. He's what we need as an edge threat. He's real explosive off the edge."

A third standout in the 22-player class, which is ranked No. 6 by Rivals.com and fifth by Scout.com, is athlete Devante "Speedy" Noil. He was ranked as the top prospect as an athlete after piling up passing, rushing and receiving yards at Edna Karr high school in New Orleans.

University of Texas

Texas coach Charlie Strong barely had a month to accept his new job, move to Austin and somehow hold together the Longhorns' 2014 recruiting class after Mack Brown's sudden departure after 16 years.

Strong did it, keeping together a class recruiting experts rank among the best in the Big 12. Texas signed 23 players to national letters-of-intent Wednesday, including the big-time quarterback the Longhorns need, and two out-of-state defensive linemen Strong originally tried to lure to Louisville.

Strong spent the past month re-recruiting and "re-selling" Texas to the players who had committed to the Longhrons when Brown was the coach. Making it particularly awkward was that Brown announced his resignation on Dec. 14, the same weekend Texas hosted more than a dozen recruits for the team banquet and their official visit.

Those recruits were left to wonder who would take over and Strong accepted the job three weeks later. He soon was dashing to Dallas, Houston, New Orleans and San Antonio to meet and greet recruits, parents and coaches and keep anyone from abandoning ship.

"A very intense couple of weeks," Strong said. "We had to sell ourselves. When a new staff comes in, the recruit has to be comfortable with you."

Among them is Jerrod Heard, the only quarterback Texas signed.

The U.S. Army All-American won consecutive Texas Class 4A state championships and fills a critical need at a position where depth is a major concern. Senior David Ash, the presumed starter next season, missed most of the 2013 season because of recurring concussion symptoms and backup Tyrone Swoopes hardly played.

Considered one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country, Heard passed for 2,148 yards, rushed for 2,172 and accounted for 50 touchdowns last season.

Brown's departure prompted a couple of defections from the class, but Strong filled the gaps by signing defensive tackles Poona Ford of Hilton Head, S.C., and Chris Nelson of Lakeland, Fla. Both were players Strong had tried to recruit at Louisville.

Strong said he wants to dominate the Texas recruiting grounds. That will be tough as old rival Texas A&M has seized momentum with coach Kevin Sumlin dazzling recruits with the school's Aggies-themed helicopter that has been nicknamed the "Swagcopter."

"We're not going to be a gadget program," Strong said.

"We're still the University of Texas," Strong said. "We will always be the flagship university of this state."

Texas Christian University

TCU is changing its offense, and got some top-notch recruits to help in that transition.

The Horned Frogs signed 22 players to national letters of intent Wednesday. That includes a school-record five four-star recruits, all on offense.

Foster Sawyer, a 6-foot-5 quarterback from All Saints' Episcopal School in Fort Worth, is one of the state's top quarterback prospects. The other four-star signees are receivers Corey McBride and Emanuel Porter, offensive lineman Ty Barrett and running back Shaun Nixon, a late addition after initially committing to Texas A&M.

The Frogs also signed Decatur quarterback Grayson Muehlstein.

Patterson hired two new co-offensive coordinators in December, and says the Frogs are "morphing into an Oklahoma State-Texas Tech style of throwing offense."

Baylor

Big 12 champion Baylor's 2014 signing class was in place for so long that the Bears didn't even host any campus visits on the final weekend of recruiting.

Coach Art Briles' team added 23 players Wednesday, seven who are taking classes in Waco. Briles said the group mostly committed last summer after the 2012 season and a Holiday Bowl victory, and that their decisions were reinforced by the Bears' first Big 12 title in the fall.

"They have stayed strongly committed to us with many suitors. They had a chance to date other people, and they didn't do it," Briles said. "That really says a lot about them, and I think a lot about the direction of our football program."

Briles admitted that it "felt so weird" not hosting any recruits or parents last weekend, a first for the coach. But he and the Bears were feeling good when signing day was done.

The class is headlined by four receivers, all from Texas - KD Cannon from Mount Pleasant, Davion Hall from Texarkana, Chris Platt from Willis and Ishmael Zamora from Houston. Hall will be going through spring drills after graduating high school early and enrolling at Baylor.

"If there is a better receiver class in America, then somebody's speaking with fork and tongue, because there's not," Briles said. "There's not four receivers better than who we signed. They're just not out there. ... These guys are phenomenal players that are very, very skilled. And that's a great thing about where we're at as a program right now. We have proof to these student-athletes that this can happen, and will happen."
