It happened at a home on Etta near Firnat.
The victim's family says Effie Thompson, 65, was just returning home from a mammogram when she was confronted by two men who were burglarizing her home.
Police say she ran into the suspects in her driveway, apparently as they were leaving. According to investigators, they beat her there.
Neighbors tell us they found her in the driveway and called 911. Police say the victim has severe head injuries.
The attackers fled before anyone could catch them.
"That's not right. She works (too) hard for them to come inside her home and take what we have earned. Worked hard, don't bother nobody... We go to church on Sunday," Thompson's daughter, Stephanie Ellis said. "That's wrong."
It's not clear if the attackers stole anything before they took off. Neighbors told police they fled in a gold pickup truck. They don't have any further description.
Thompson is in critical condition at Ben Taub General Hospital.
