Bookkeeper accused of stealing from employer

HOUSTON

Teresa Atanacia Gonzalez, 39, is charged with felony theft. According to charging documents, Gonzalez stole nearly $53,000 from her former employer by altering her handwritten paychecks.

Gonzalez was hired as a bookkeeper for a Houston company in March 2013 and was given a weekly check for her services, according to court documents. But Gonzalez's employer said he was tipped off about the alleged theft after he received an overdraft notice from his bank account.

When he reviewed the withdrawals, he noticed an extra number was tacked onto the checks he'd issued Gonzalez. In some cases, an additional $2,000 was added to her paycheck.

The employer contacted authorities, and after an investigation, detectives determined Gonzalez allegedly had altered her paychecks from May through September.

In 2011, Gonzalez pleaded guilty to a theft charge in exchange for the dismissal of two other forgery cases against her. Authorities say she was still serving a six-year probation at the time the new allegations were made against her.
