A mortgage broker in The Woodlands decided to host a benefit to help pay some of the mounting bills a family is facing and help get their daughter a life-saving heart transplant.
Cherry Creek has already exceeded its goal of $10,000 and it is hoping to far surpass it with help from the community on Halloween.
"I love to play guitar, hang out with my friends, golf a little bit," Anna King said.
Anna is your typical 14-year-old, except she's not.
"I've been waiting for a heart transplant for like 537 days," she said.
Anna has dilated cardiomyopathy. Hear heart is swollen, can't pump properly so she needs a new one.
"I've been sick for so long that people start to forget about you, right? 'Cause it's been so long. But things like this, they just tell you the opposite," Anna said.
"Things like this" refers to big Halloween party being thrown in her honor. The decorations, the games, the candy -- all of it -- in, of all places, at a mortgage broker's office.
"The support we've gotten from the community is amazing," Anna's father, Joe King, said.
Cherry Creek Mortgage is hosting the fundraising party because employee Jason Higham's wife was Anna's teacher when she was diagnosed.
"We just really want to give back to the family and help her out any way that we can, and raise some awareness at the same time," Higham said.
Higham introduced Anna to his coworkers, and she touched their hearts.
"We've put together Halloween for a Heart, and it's a family friendly event. We're gonna have trick or treating here in the office and we're going to have a silent auction to benefit Anna," Cherry Creek Mortgage employee Erin Ward said.
It's a benefit for a teen who is anything but typical.
The Halloween for a Heart party is from 3-6pm Thursday at the company's Market Street office, 9595 Six Pines Dr., Suite 6310.
