Yesterday, the team tweeted about a 'Ladies Night' scheduled for September 27, in which women could learn about baseball, while enjoying food, drinks music and more.
The backlash from followers was somewhat immediate, with one person tweeting, "Implying women don't know about baseball?" and another saying the team should, "Consider yourself punched in an unmentionable location.'
We contacted the Astros for a statement. They sent us the following:
"The Astros apologize to those that have been offended. Our intent is to have a unique and fun event similar to what many other sports teams host.
The goal of the event, which is catered to women and similar to what several other MLB, NFL and NBA teams do, is to create a unique and exciting outing that our fans will enjoy. It will include the unique opportunity to have Q & A sessions with Astros broadcasters and members of the baseball operations staff, and the chance to meet players. We feel this opportunity would give any fan, male or female, the chance to perhaps learn something new about the game of baseball.
To those that have been offended, we apologize. That certainly was not our intent."
