Major Joe Buccino said Wednesday that despite the drop in personnel, once restructuring is completed by 2019 the percentage of Army enlistees stationed at Fort Bliss will rise to 5.4 percent. The percentage stood at 1.8 percent about 10 years ago.
The size of the force nationally will drop from 570,000 to 490,000 as a result of federal budget cuts.
The Army will eliminate at least 12 combat brigades, including one at Fort Bliss and another at Fort Hood in Central Texas. Fort Hood is expected to lose about 2,900 soldiers.
Fort Bliss has nearly 27,500 personnel stationed there while Fort Hood has about 46,500.
