According to the school district, a Klein Forest High School student spotted the gun in a classmate's backpack during lunchtime and reported it to an administrator.
Campus officials searched the student in question but later discovered that the gun was handed to another student at the school. When that student was searched, the gun was found.
Both students were arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property. One of those students has been identified as 17-year-old Dwayne Sarabia.
The school district says the incident mandates expulsion under the Klein ISD Student Code of Conduct.
"The Klein ISD and Klein Forest administration praise the young man who immediately brought this to the attention of the appropriate personnel so the matter could be handled swiftly and without incident," Judy Rimato, Associate Superintendent for Communications and Planning," said in a prepared statement. "The Klein ISD will continue to work diligently to keep students and staff safe and secure. Firearms on school grounds will not be tolerated."
