Patrol car, church van collision in east Houston sends 5 to hospital

HOUSTON

The accident was reported shortly before 7:40pm on Navigation Boulevard near North Milby.

Authorities say two deputies were rushing to a disturbance call -- with sirens and lights on -- when a church van pulled out in front of them, causing the crash.

"I heard a real big bang, like a real big bang. I didn't hear any brakes or anything beforehand -- just the bang -- and I heard the brakes when I came outside and saw that the car was already stopped," neighbor Ronnie Kircus said.

Kircus says he didn't hear any sirens, but officials say the officers had both their sirens and lights on at the time of the accident.

Both deputies and three people -- a pastor, his wife and church member from nearby Iglesia De Cristo Fuente De Vida -- inside the van were taken to hospital, but we're told none of the injuries appeared to be life threatening.

While the investigation is still incomplete, we're told it's possible the driver of the van may be cited for not yielding the right of way to the officers.
