The Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in the U.S., according to the American Kennel Club.

The breed has taken the top spot for 22 years in a row. German Shepherds still come in second. Golden Retrievers are third.

The American Kennel Club bases its ranking on the dogs registered with the club. The AKC says labs are popular because they are versatile and can be family pets or rescue dogs. They also come in three colors.
