Galveston fishing crew rescues people aboard sinking boat

GALVESTON, TX

The quartet was rescued about 100 miles southeast of the island by the crew of the fishing boat Blackjack, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston watchstanders were contacted at 6:21am by the sinking boat's captain after his 31-foot boat was taking on water.

Watchstanders then issued an alert to crews in the area that four people are in distress. Soon after, a crew aboard the Blackjack responded and said they had saved the four people from the capsized vessel.

"It's awesome seeing someone respond to the UMIB like that," said Petty Officer 2nd Class John Schroeder, a watchstander with Sector Houston-Galveston. "He was in the area, only 40 minutes away and he responded. It shows the system works."

Coast Guard Cutter Skipjack retrieved the survivors from the Blackjack and transported them to Galveston.
