Man accused of vandalizing Picasso at Menil Collection turns himself in to authorities

HOUSTON

/*Uriel Landeros*/ allegedly spray painted Picasso's "Woman in a Red Armchair" painting back in June 2012. The act was caught on camera and posted on YouTube. Landeros was charged with felony graffiti and felony criminal mischief.

Landeros, a University of Houston student, had been aware he was wanted but had spent at least some of the last six months in Mexico and Guatemala.

We chatted with him briefly via Facebook on Monday, but he wouldn't answer why he was finally turning himself in. His attorney, Emily Detoto, says he was ready to come back and face the charges.

Officials with both Hidalgo County and the U.S. Marshal's Office tell Eyewitness News Landeros is expected to appear before a judge in the Valley on Wednesday. After that, he will be transferred back to Harris County to face the charges.

The painting is still being restored.
