Highway shut down for hours after fatal pedestrian accident

Police in Sugar Land are investigating the death of a big rig driver who was struck by a car on the Southwest Freeway after he pulled over and got out of his 18 wheeler.

All southbound lanes of Highway 59 at Highway 99 were shut down for hours overnight because of a fatal pedestrian accident.

Sugar Land police say the driver of an 18-wheeler pulled over on the shoulder, got out and began walking with a flashlight when he was hit. The driver who hit him remained on the scene.

Police say they're not yet sure why the big rig driver pulled over. He's been described only as a Hispanic male in his 40s or 50s.

Crews closed the lanes for several hours overnight due to the police investigation.

The victim hasn't been identified. No other details were immediately available.
