It happened around 2am in the 2000 block of Dunlavy near Indiana in southwest Houston.
Benjamin David Becke, 30, of Huffman, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say a downstairs neighbor was upset over loud music coming from his upstairs neighbor's apartment and confronted Becke on the porch.
The two got into a fight and the neighbor pulled out a gun and shot Becke in the chest. He died on the front steps of the apartment building.
Officials say the neighbor was taken in for questioning. He has not been charged and the case will be referred to a grand jury.
