Car crashes into day care facility, collapses building

HOUSTON

Police say an out-of-control driver crashed into multiple buildings of Right Fit Day Care in the 5700 block of Rickey Street at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, east of Highway 288 on Houston's south side.

Luckily, kids had just gotten out of the building when it happened.

Look past the crime scene tape, through the rubble and you'll notice signs of the children who used to play there. Their games, toys and pictures were now strewn across the grass.

"I'm truly blessed. I'm blessed and I keep thinking about that. There is no kids and nothing happened to them," day care director Rhonda Lacy said.

Police say an out-of-control driver crashed into Right Fit Day Care early Sunday morning. He leveled a metal fence then slammed into three walls before his car got stuck halfway inside a building.

Firefighters had to pull the driver out then tow away his car. Police say the driver was speeding and possibly high on drugs.

Teacher Sharon Hicks lives nearby. She called police after a neighbor told her what happened.

"I was like wow, there goes my job. But I was blessed that there wasn't nobody inside the building because normally I am the night worker," Hicks said.

The day care is usually open and busy 24 hours a day. Luckily, no teachers or students were inside Sunday morning.

But for now, employees have lost their jobs and 37 kids have lost their day care center.

"Sometimes we need to stop and think that we can mess up people's lives. He has messed up a lot of people's lives," Hicks said.

The driver is recovering in the hospital, suffering from life-threatening injuries. We're told he will be cited, at the very least, for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

There is no word yet on where parents who use the facility can take their children.
